Shireen Nasri Abu Akleh — Palestinian journalist, born in Jerusalem in 1971, best known for her work as a correspondent with Al Jazeera, from a well-known Christian family in Bethlehem.
At dawn on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, Shireen Abu Akleh woke to news that Israeli occupation forces had stormed the Jenin refugee camp. She headed quickly to the camp to join the Al Jazeera crew that had spent the night in Jenin.
And in the body of the message: "On my way there. I'll send you the report as soon as the picture is clear".
Abu Akleh put on the protective vest that clearly identified her as press, donned her helmet, and headed with several other journalists to a position near the occupation forces.
There were no armed Palestinians anywhere near the journalists. The area was quiet as the recordings established — no sounds of any clashes were heard from the journalists' arrival until they began to move forward.
It was only moments later that bullets came from the occupation forces' position toward the journalists, striking Al Jazeera's Jenin producer Ali Samoudi in the shoulder.
Given the gravity of the crime committed against the martyred journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, we have dedicated a full file under the title "Justice for Shireen" — to introduce her, document the details of her assassination, and demand that justice be served in her case.
